FDNY BROOKLYN ENGINE COMPANY 18 LOGBOOK, 1883-1887."Organized November 30, 1878 at 650 Hart Street near Central Avenue, Brooklyn, NY"

Condition Description:
faded blue pebble three quarter leather hardcover logbook. Front cover has applied 3.25" x 5.5" square with dates of use in period writing. Corners on both covers are diagonal black leather with gilt border; similar 1" in width along spine. Corners are worn. Wear along the cover edges. Both covers are separated from the spine. Tape residue along spine of both covers. Front pastedown has "Watch" names in ink in the upper left corner. "Engine 16" written in the middle of the pastedown as well. Exterior of pages when closed have faded yet colorful
faux
marble presentation. Interior pages complete but in two sections with binding threads visible. Pages are number stamped; 185 of 288 are unused. Multiple entries by several individuals in black, blue and red ink in period writing. Found in old
Stern's
zipper close plastic packaging which appears to be for sheets or bedding. Price label on wrapper:

. Book and wrapper do have a slight musty smell but it is not overwhelming.

Entries include:
Foreman and watch present, return of various engines from calls. Fireman on horse and walking patrol. Individuals leaving and returning from breakfast and dinner.
Also included is a Brooklyn, September 8th, 1883 printed General Orders No. 56 from Fire Department Headquarters.
The GO provides guidance on giving fireman one hour and fifteen minutes off when the polls are open to vote in the primary election. In pencil and period handwriting on the back are names of individuals on watch for five days: 24-28. Additional epherema includes paperwork, watch notes, envelopes.

"One hundred and thirty-five years ago the fireman's life was a hard one. He would work 24 hours a day for seven days and have the eight day off. He could go home for meals twice a day. During his hours firehouse the time was taken up with housewatch duty, hydrant inspection, messenger service, detail to other companies for meals, house cleaning chores, and taking care of the horses. The salary for a first grade fireman was 0 a year or .46 a week for the 168 hour work week."
