This auction is for a soft-back ‘1948 Yearbook,’ that was used by a Portsmouth fireman to document various items including when he worked, what he purchased/price and personal notes regarding his family, attending ball games, fire department activities, movie nights, etc. In the front are several pre-printed reference pages that include: Domestic and Foreign Postage Rates, Distance and Mail Times from New York to Cities in United States, Common Stains and How to Remove Them, Good Rules for Business Men, Weights and Measures, Explanation of Weather Bureau Flag Signal, Presidents of the United States (through Harry Truman), Nicknames of the States, State Flowers, as well as individual pages by date, starting with January 1, 1948 and ending with December 31, 1948. Examples of his entries include: “Chief Sykes gave me 8 shirts and 11 ties and some underclothes.” “Didn’t work much this last month too cold.” “Got check from

Telephone bill – 4.03, Sears Robuck – 6.00, Vacum Cleaner – 5.00, bought Lila 3 gowns – 17.97.” “Lent Blackwell 5.00 Baby Born Another Girl Weight 7 Lbs.” “Went around No. 3 engine house. Went out on a run with Robinson. Coldest run I’ve had since I’ve been here in the Department.” The entries were made in black ink and are clearly legible. The book itself shows wear with yellowing pages, etc. All pages are still attached to the binding. .
