    Description

    Welcome.
    WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT IT:
This pin is strongly attributed to either Juan Calavaza or Dan Simplicio, both great Zuni artists. It's an old piece, dating to the 40s or 50s. The faceted turquoise stones are very special and look like oil paint was poured on them. Their color and their shapes are just fabulous. They are bezel set in scalloped hand made bezels and encircled by a pair of hand made snakes, hand stamped. The applied raindrops are hand stamped with the same stamp as the snakes, so the piece is well integrated aesthetically. It has a gorgeous balance and wonderful aesthetic.
BACKGROUND: Dan Simplicio's work is in the C.G.Wallace catalog, and every important collection, gallery and museum. Dan Simplicio was one of C. G. Wallace's favorite smiths. He was versatile and prolific. His work was prominently featured in the 1975 Sotheby's auction of the C. G. Wallace collection. Work from this collection is in the permanent collection of the Heard Museum in Phoenix. Juan Calavaza was Dan's nephew who lived from 1928-1970, and was married to Effie Calavaza. He worked from a young age till his death in 1970, having been trained by Dan.  Dan Simplicio is credited for having been the first to use natural nuggets in his work and he taught his nephew his techniques. Both used snakes and stones such as this and bezels like these. This is a fabulous example of the work of both, IMO. and is a spectacular work of art.

Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target.
